"Why do you need narcotics, Mr. Lee, is a question that stupid
psychiatrists ask. The answer is: I need junk to get out of bed in the
morning, to shave and eat breakfast. I need it to stay alive. The idea
that addiction is somehow a psychological illness is, I think, totally
ridiculous. It's as psychological as malaria. It's a matter of
exposure. People, generally speaking, will take any intoxicant or any
drug that gives them a pleasant effect if it is available to them. You
become a narcotics addict because you do not have strong motivations
in any other direction. Junk wins by default."
