Mary Hansen of Stereolab Killed In London

Stereolab's Mary Hansen has been killed in a bicycle accident in London. One report says that a truck backed into her while she was out riding in Central London.

A short announcement at the Stereolab website states "Mary 1/11/1966 - 9/12/2002 It is with great regret and deep sadness that I must announce the death of Mary. We will all miss her dearly. Stereolab"

Mary, the guitarist and backing singer for Stereolab, was born in Maryborough just outside Brisbane. She had been with London based Stereolab since 1992. Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier formed Stereolab in 1990 and met Mary backstage at a concert in Paris.

They are credited as being one of the main influences of modern day art rock mixing 60s pop with alternative soft R'n'B sounds to create a new wave of lounge music.

Their last album 'Sound-Dust' was released through Elektra in 2001. They were working on a follow-up for early next year.

Corey Taylor of Stone Sour and Slipknot has posted a message as well at Stereolab's website. He says "Even though you would not think it, Stereolab are one of my favourite bands and Mary was a great vocalist and musician. She will be missed and I hope Stereolab come back even stronger. Stone Sour and Slipknot send their best wishes. Mary Hansen R.I.P".

Mary's funeral will take place in Brisbane next week.
